Haunted Eastern Shore: Ghostly Tales

Hope House - Tunis Mills Area - Talbot County

Hope House located on the Wye River is one of the great mansions of Talbot County and was once home to the famous Lloyd and Tilghman families. It resembles Mount Clare in Baltimore, home of Charles Carroll. Col. Tench Tilghman, General Washington's aide-de-camp resided here.

There is an old tale about the boxwood gardens of Hope House being haunted. The gardens are said to have run all the way down to the water.

A beautiful young girl lived who once lived at Hope House. One night, a Spanish ship sailed up to Hope House and a handsome Spanish officer came ashore. He and the girl fell in love. However, he soon had to leave and could not take the girl with him. She pined away. now, on moonlit nights, she walks in the boxwood garden down to the water's edge, looking for her lover.

Today, Hope House is a private home.
